Amy & Josh’s 1920s Art Deco American Theater Wedding

Happy Monday everyone! I’m glad you stopped by because I have another week filled with refreshingly unique wedding & engagement session inspiration just for you, and the celebration I’m going to share with you today is certainly no exception.

We are still on a vintage roll here on Poptastic Bride. Hot on the heels of the brilliant silent film inspired e-sesh I posted on Friday and the silent film inspiration post from yesterday is Amy & Josh’s glamorous art deco themed affair filled with eclectic 1920s inspired details that echo the mood of the period.

Meet the lovely couple. The fabulous photos you see on this page were sent in by Nathan of Richard Bell Photography who had this to say about the day:

Amy and Josh had a 20s-inspired, art deco themed wedding reception at the American Theater in Charleston, SC.  The old world lobby of the Francis Marion Hotel was a great start to the day, followed by a walk through Charleston Alleys, to the American Theater.   The colors, posters, and shapes of the theater were incredibly fun, and Amy’s details and decor were right on target.  The Bentley was a great touch.

Isn’t Amy gorgeous? Luckily she’s also on hand to tell us more about herself and Josh:

We live in Goose Creek SC. I am a psychiatric therapist and Josh owns a home improvement business. We met at Grace Lutheran Church in Clarion PA when we were about 11 yrs old. When Josh was 18 his family moved to South Carolina and we lost contact. Six years later I moved to South Carolina for graduate school. By coincidence Josh looked me up through Facebook and I only lived 2 hours away. The rest is history!

More details about their wedding in Amy’s own words:

We wanted to do a 20’s/30’s art deco inspired wedding which is why the American Theater (a restored art deco theater) in downtown Charleston was the perfect venue.  We didn’t want straight flapper/gangster but we wanted it to be a little more classy. We asked guests to wear inspired pieces from the period.

We had lots of suggestions from family and friends but we wanted to do what we felt was right for us and stuck with that. We did not do “traditional” for the sake of being traditional.

It’s so cute how their guests — and pastor! — were game enough to dress up in theme:

Our pastor even dressed up in a tux, top hat, and cane (his idea!). We did not want a long and serious ceremony and it was anything but that. Our pastor had us laughing from the stories he told about us.

Here’s what else the couple did to pull off a 1920s art deco themed wedding:

As guests arrived they received candy from that time period (theater theme) and they were asked to take a Polaroid pic wearing 20s/30s props we provided for our guest book.  We played music of the period for the ceremony and dinner music. We walked down the aisle to Moonlight Serenade.

For favors we had pearl necklaces for the ladies and fake cigars for the men. After the ceremony the guests enjoyed Hors d’oeuvres in the jazz lounge with two of our cousins (who are singers) singing jazz. For the reception we pulled in a lot of trends from the period like peacock feathers and cala lillies.

Amy leaves us with a few words of advice:

Definitely pick songs that you love and make no excuses! Josh and I took dance classes before our wedding. I was actually the skeptical one but I am so glad we took them because it was soo much fun and we just played around with dance moves at the wedding.

Wasn’t everything just stunning? Thank you Nathan and Richard Bell Photography for sending your wonderful images my way, and congratulations to Amy & Josh! Thank you for sharing your special day with us. 🙂
