A Retro All American Picnic (With a Rockabilly Twist) Engagement Shoot
Well hello it’s Monday once again! I’m glad you dropped by (and you’ll be glad you did!) because starting off the week is a super fun retro and rockabilly flavored engagement styled shoot starring some all-American picnic favorites and this adorable sweet-and-so-in-love couple…
I just love talented husband and wife photo duo Brent and Anna of Live View Studios for sending me such awesome retro shoots (they’re also responsible for this groovy 70s styled session)! Here’s a behind-the-scenes look of the day:
Our inspiration for it began when we saw a pinup poster of a girl fanning a smoking grill with her dress, and then thought it would be cute to create some engagement ideas for an all-American picnic with a bit of a retro / rockabilly twist. Our couple are real-life sweethearts, Heather & Ryan (though not engaged yet), and they’re both very much the style of people that this shoot ended up becoming. All-American foods like hot dogs, apple pie, & Coca Cola were used as picnic foods. A retro bike also adds some fun. Fans of our work have often remarked that the photos from the lake especially have a “Notebook” movie feel and that our Ryan looks very much like Ryan Gosling, which is an added bonus that we didn’t even plan for. :)
When I learned that these two cuties were a real-life couple, I thought it would be fun for us to “meet” them too. Here’s the stunning Heather with the deets:
I’m from Wilmington, NC. I went to Peace College for English and Theatre and work as an Assistant Acquisitions Editor for a science and technical (Engineering) book publisher. My favorite food is bacon (which Ryan thought was hilarious the first time he asked me my favorite type of food and I said “bacon”). I’m a grammar nerd. I love Scrabble, the Disney Channel, and shoes.
Ryan was born in Florida, though he claims Liverpool, NY is where he’s from if you ask – that’s where he spent most of his life. He attended University of Buffalo, State University of New York and moved to NC after graduation for work. He now owns an emergency property restoration company with his father. He’s a former wrestler (high school and college) and misses it – he was awesome at it! He has 7 tattoos – the Halloween one is my favorite. He loves zombie movies. He’s also amazing at guitar – or at least will be one day. Oh, and he has a reaaaally sweet Mustang!
There’s more to love about these two! Back to you, Heather:
We both share a love for the Greenbay Packers, food, especially Mexican, terrible puns and bad jokes, and music. We both think we’re pretty hilarious (and Ryan actually is!). We both enjoy reading Chuck Palahniuk. We have a LOT in common and have the kind of connection most people only dream about.
After knowing each other less than 2 months, he got me a Lite Brite for Christmas. I was amazed that he could pick such a perfect gift for me after such a short amount of time. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll spend the rest of my life with him!
I love the way he looks at me, the way he brushes my hair out of my face, the way he makes me laugh, and the way he’s always there for me. As cheesy as it sounds, he is the reason I believe in love.
Awww, aren’t they the sweetest?
I asked Heather about her dream wedding. While the lovebirds aren’t engaged (YET!), they do have most of the future magical day already planned:
My dream wedding is a big, fun celebration that ties in lots of things unique to US. We’re both fun-loving people and my hope is that when the day comes, everyone involved will feel it. I want the whole thing to be a reflection of us (individually and as a couple).
Of course there’s a beautiful dress. Maybe I’ll wear cowboy boots? Or even Converse?! Or some gorgeous heels… I have all of the jewelry I’ll wear picked out (an old pearl add-a-bead necklace my grandfather gave me when I was little, silver bumble bee earrings – bees for my grandmother who is my favorite person in the world).
Ryan’s ideas sound more like a boy’s birthday party (Star Wars or X-Men theme??) or a crazy dream (on top of Mt. Kilimanjaro with some rock legend playing live in the background). Maybe he’ll wear a Star Wars or X-Men tie with his tux? Maybe all of his groomsmen will wear fun ties, too!?
It will be outside – my uncle owns a house on the waterway in Wilmington, NC where I’m from that would be perfect…OR in the aquarium at Ft. Fisher. I love that place. Both Ryan and I wanted to be Marine Biologists when we were in high school, so I think he’d love it, too.
From the ceremony to the reception, I think there will be a good mix of traditional and “funky” and all of it will be a blast and will show off how happy and in love we are.
Sounds like a wedding made exactly for this blog, doesn’t it? Let’s hope I get to share it with you when the time comes!
It’s easy to tell that the couple LOVED posing for this shoot. Heather remembers the day fondly:
The shoot with Brent and Anna was so much fun! I think they did a great job capturing Ryan and me in love. The shoot theme was totally their idea, we were just kind of along for the ride, but it was great. I don’t know that it will be exactly the style we choose when the time comes, but I love that they showed off/tied in pieces of our personalities (I love the shots with Ryan’s tattoo). And I love the way they shoot! Brent and Anna are a great team. The two of them are so in love so it’s perfect that they spend their life with other couples in love. I have a feeling that when the time comes we’ll be seeing them again.
Ooh, that sounds exciting! Thank you Brent and Anna (who I agree did a fabulous job) for sending this awesome photo session my way, and many thanks to Heather and Ryan for sharing themselves and their love for each other with us. Good luck with your wedding plans, you two! :)
