Kate & Dave’s Fun and Easygoing Cape Cod Wedding

Kate & Dave’s wedding had a “Cape Cod casual” theme. They had a checklist of exactly what they wanted — a beautiful setting outdoors, a meaningful ceremony, great hamburgers, and a fantastic band. They focused on those and left the little things to chance which resulted in a lovely and laid-back wedding that was completely stress-free, allowing them quality time with each other and their loved ones.

Are you loving the relaxed mood of this wedding yet? These gorgeous images are courtesy of Brooklyn-based photographer Jake Murphy of JBM Wedding Photography who, incidentally, is a documentary photographer which explains his non-invasive shooting approach (watch out for more from him on these pages real soon!) When he showed me this wedding I immediately said yes because a so-in-love couple + a meaningful celebration + beautiful camera work = the way to my blogger heart. 🙂

From Jake:

Kate and Dave’s wedding was a truly magical event. The private location on the beach in Cape Cod was a fitting location for the diy style wedding. It was a photographer’s dream!  The portrait shoot was by far my favorite part of the day. Between the boathouse and the osprey nest on the peninsula I knew there was potential for great shots. So we all took off our shoes and made our way into the marsh. Kate and Dave were so wonderful and cooperative! At times I found myself knee-deep in bog water but it was worth it. We had a blast and this was all before the ceremony! The day only got better from there.

It’s time we meet the adorable pair. Luckily pretty Kate is here to tell us more about herself and Dave:

We met in 2008 and knew within about 3 weeks that we wanted to marry the other person. After about a year and half of dating, Dave asked me to marry him while on a hike in Connecticut. We got married in September in 2011 on Cape Cod. I am an Emergency Room nurse, and Dave is a Paramedic and an ICU nurse. We are both goofy, love the outdoors (skiing especially), ice cream and a really good burger.

Kate is a DIY bride. She shares more on how they made their wedding completely their own:

Dave and I collaborated really well on the big things: the setting (my family’s house in Orleans on a bluff overlooking the ocean), food (a gourmet burger bar that people could personalize), and band (a great Boston-based blues band called Scratch My Back). The rest was sort of filled in by a lot of things I did by hand. My mother made tiny bowls with our initials as the favors, we hand painted signs, I ordered the flowers and arranged them myself. We pretty much tried to spend money where we thought it mattered the most, and then tried to be more economical/do things ourselves as much as possible, and that ended up resulting in a wedding that felt totally like us.

Some very helpful parting insights from the couple:

Have YOUR wedding. If that means a party with 30 people and your brother is the officiator, perfect. If that’s a huge gathering in Scotland with 200 people, then so be it. But make sure you’re not doing something because that’s what everyone does. If you love a tradition, then do it! If you aren’t comfortable with a tradition, CHANGE it. Please the people that are important for you to please, but make sure that you are comfortable with everything you’re doing.

Try not to sweat the small stuff, really. You won’t believe how much certain things don’t matter anymore the day of the wedding, like, the shoes the bridesmaids are wearing. No one is looking, and no one will remember. I promise.
