Kim & Julien’s Fun and Fabulous No-Rules Wedding

Happy Friday everyone! Capping off this week is a gorgeous wedding filled with so many personal creative touches. To start with, Kim and Julien had their wedding at the exact same venue Julien’s parents had their reception at 30 years ago. Their details include whimsical elements that define who they are including Julien’s race car cufflinks, Kim’s purple Chucks, the custom vinyl record table numbers, and the AMAZING train-books-and-Brooklyn-Bridge cake that defined them to a T.

They didn’t have an actual theme — the only “rule” they followed was to not have rules, that they would do everything their way, and that their loved ones would have lots of fun.

We are able to witness this delightful wedding today through the beautiful work of Brett Alison Photography. Brett remembers the day very fondly:

Kim and Julien had a fun, fabulous wedding at the Hawthorne Country Club in southern Massachusetts. At the time, they thought it might be the last wedding held at this popular venue, but time will tell as it is now in the hands of new owners. Kim and Julien had so many personalized details throughout the day – from the start when Julien surprised Kim with an infinity bracelet from Tiffany’s, to the vows they wrote themselves, and ceremony officiated by their friend, to their table centerpieces which showcased their affinity for music and the literary world. The guys loved their personalized cuff links and funky green and black striped socks, while Kim was quick to change into her trusty Chucks once the partying got underway.  Their cake was even lovingly made by the bride’s cousins, with messages from the couple’s parents done in edible ink!

Kim is such a classic beauty! And luckily she’s here to share her and Julien’s love story with us:

Jules and I met through mutual friends while living in NYC. We actually attended Emerson College together, but never met while we were there. Once our friend — and eventual maid-of-honor — Danielle introduced us, we bonded most while hanging out at a Red Sox bar in the heart of Yankee territory. Though we didn’t end up dating seriously until years later, by then we were close friends. We now live in Cambridge, MA where Julien is an Academic Advisor and I am a Website Editor & Content Strategist.

I can totally relate with their story as my husband and I went to the same university but didn’t meet until after we graduated! On to more of the lovely details…

Love the tasteful mix of pinks, purples, and greens! Kim tells us more about their wedding planning mindset:

The single most important thing to us when we set out to plan the wedding was that we created an event at which everyone had a good time. We’re a little goofy, so a super-traditional, big church, huge dress, massive bridal party affair just wouldn’t have been in line with who we were as a couple. So we set out to plan an event where everyone had fun, we’d laugh a lot, and we felt reflected who we are – both individually and together.

Early on in the process we banned the word “should” from our planning vocabulary. It was essentially the only “theme” of the wedding –- we were going to do this our way.

A friend of ours married us and wrote a ceremony that left us both laughing heartily at some points and incredibly touched at others. Writing our own wedding vows, as well as repeating the traditional “Do you take this man …” version allowed us to both express ourselves and pledge our lives to one another.

I honestly only noticed Julien’s raised leg after I posted the photo, lol!

Liking everything so far? Here’s Kim with the deets.

I’m a big book nerd, so our centerpieces were flower arrangements placed on top of books (donated to us by our Maid of Honor’s parents). My husband is a audiophile and vinyl album buff so we bought 45’s at a used record store in Boston and had a friend design custom album labels to serve as table numbers.

My cousins made our wedding cake – which might have been one of my favorite surprises of the day. The cake was their wedding present to us, and we had no idea what it was going to look like before we saw it at the ceremony. It included an open book — with notes to each of us from our parents, a train (Jules loves them), the Brooklyn bridge (I lived in Brooklyn when we met and for most of the time we dated), more books that included a Red Sox Yearbook, and it was all edible. No one could have made a cake that fit the two of us better.

I love love love their personalized cake, and their guests agree that it was indeed pretty special. 🙂

We got married on the deck of a country club in Dartmouth, MA (The Hawthorne Country Club) where it turned out that Jules’ parents had their wedding reception 30+ years earlier (something we didn’t know until after we had booked the venue!). So we had the DJ play their wedding song and gave them their own dance during the reception.

Cake fight! 🙂 Parting insights from our lovely couple:

Basically, from Jules’ race car cuff links to the purple Chuck Taylors I wore at the reception, there wasn’t a single part of the wedding that we weren’t 100% behind. Which left our family and friends telling us days later that the whole thing felt very “us”. And we couldn’t have been happier about that. We didn’t want to have anyone else’s wedding. We wanted to have ours.

And some friendly, very helpful advice:

While all the details were awesome, the thing that sticks out most from the day wasn’t the flowers or what we were wearing, or what songs were or weren’t played. It was having everyone we loved in one room, enjoying one another’s company and celebrating with us. Looking at the photos we see our college friends dancing with our families, our cousins laughing with our grandparents. During the planning process, it’s easy to get caught up in the details — how to appropriately address invitations, where to seat people, how to do your hair. But in the end — none of that is what matters. It’s who you spent the day with, who shared in your joy, and how you started your lives together with the people who mattered the most to you.
