Behind the Lens: Citlalli Rico Photography
Welcome to another Behind the Lens post where I interview talented wedding photographers whom I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with. Every photographer has their own distinct style so the purpose of this series is to help you choose a photographer whose style best represents you. Thus I want you to meet them not as “vendors” but as potential friends who just so happen to have the skills to creatively chronicle your special day in pictures.

Meet Destination Photographer Citlalli Rico
Today I want you to meet the lovely Cancun, Mexico-based Citlalli Rico who, as you will see below is an AMAZINGLY talented photographer. She has the incredible gift of being able to deftly capture blink-and-you’ll-miss-it emotions and moments and also has the keen ability to frame her subjects in fresh, unique, and creative ways. I had the pleasure of meeting Citla through Fearless Photographers‘ head honcho Huy Nguyen, an accomplished wedding photojournalist himself, who told me that she currently holds the record for the most Fearless Awards in the collective with a whopping 26 awards to her name… which is some kind of awesome, don’t you think? (You can see her awarded images on her Fearless profile). Citla also has numerous awarded images from the International Society of Wedding Photographers (ISPWP), a group wherein one must have shot at least 50 weddings + go through a grueling screening process to be a member.
As of this writing I’ve only shown you her gorgeous work om this page and the Creative Wedding Portraits feature I posted sometime ago. Look out in a few weeks though because I’ll be sharing some awesome and inspiring weddings and shoots by her!

Hello Citla! Please tell us more about yourself and Citlalli Rico Photography
I’m a destination wedding photographer. Most of the weddings I document are in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Mexico. I’ve been a wedding photographer now for 6 years. I try to apply the photojournalism style of photography most of the time and I work very hard to make creative and clean compositions.
The quirkiest wedding you’ve ever photographed?
It was one of my first weddings ever. The bride was wonderful and I’m sure she had magical powers. We were taking family pictures when a snake came out of nowhere and climbed up the train of her dress. Tamara (my 2nd photographer) and I tried not to freak out when we saw it. We told her calmly: “There is a snake on your dress” She looked over her shoulder and moved away as if it was just a bug. She didn’t even care. The entire day was followed by the strangest situations, but the snake one was the craziest thing that ever happened to us.
The most unusual or unexpected location you’ve shot a wedding at?
Tropical weather always brings unexpected surprises. Once during the ceremony it started to poor rain and we had a very large group of people attending the wedding with nowhere to run. As most of the hotel consisted of wide open areas the wedding coordinator guided us through the staff areas and we ended up having the wedding in an industrial kitchen because it was the only place that could accommodate all the guests and was sheltered from the rain.
A wedding photography fad you will never follow?
I try hard on staying away from post production trends. I know they might look cool today but who knows in 5 years from now.
Citla, what was your wedding was like?
Our wedding day, as cheesy as it sounds, was the happiest day of our lifes. I didn’t understand that saying until it happened. We actually had 2 wedding days. One was a surprise for our closest family and friends during a rehearsal lunch in a wonderful place in the middle of the jungle and no one knew that we were getting married until the judge started talking. The second one was a wedding on the beach and I’ve never had so much fun in my life.
Barring budget, logic or reality, what would your dream wedding (to shoot) be like?
I always appreciate clients that are loving, calm and laid back. My dream weddings to shoot are always the ones where there is a lot of emotion and love. It also doesn’t hurt if the venue has areas that are “not resort looking” and the sun provides us with some hard light, my favorite!
A book, movie or tv show you’d love to base a styled shoot on?
Swing Kids will be a wicked theme, without the drama of course. Or Kill Bill but less blood.
A celebrity couple’s wedding you’d like to photograph if you could?
I would have loved to shoot the teenage girl and the Vampire’s wedding (lol)
Seriously, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis or any of the 4 weddings from the movie “Four Weddings and a Funeral”
Quick, name 5 favorite songs off the top of your head!
Contigo – Joaquin Sabina / You and Me – Dave Matthews Band / Everlong Acoustic Version- Foo Fighters / Que precio tiene el cielo – Mark Anthony / Traeme la noche – Gustavo Cerati
