Kelly & John’s Urban-Cool Architectural Wedding

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m thrilled to share with you this creative, modern, and uber-hip art gallery wedding because I know you will love it just as much as I do. Kelly & John are architects so they both have a natural eye for aesthetics and great design, and this was reflected well in the contemporary graphics on their reception signage and the stationery suite John designed, the structural lighting they made by hand, and the stylish choice of venues. The couple also let go of traditions that didn’t resonate with them, which resulted in a fun, casual party atmosphere where everyone really let loose (see zombie photos) and had a blast!

We’re able to witness this refreshingly unique celebration today courtesy of the fabulous Carolyn Scott Photography who, as you know, is no stranger to this blog! (The truth is I get excited whenever Carolyn has something for me because she seems to know exactly the kind of weddings/shoots that make my heart skip a beat, this one included naturally. 🙂 )

Here’s what Carolyn had to say about Kelly and John and their special day:

Kelly and John met in architecture school at NC State. Together they’ve traveled much of the world already and have won bike rack design contests for the city of Raleigh. They dance to Prince, Queen, and Bruce Springsteen and watch the Walking Dead. They love each other, their family, their friends, and well-designed buildings. Together, they’re one of our most fun and lovely couples to date. Despite the rain that came in epic proportions, dowsing their previously-outdoor-ceremony, they didn’t complain or fret once… and were fantastic clients with a great sense of humor and joy. 🙂

Let’s meet the adorable pair. Pretty Kelly is here to share with us their (impressive!) backgrounds:

We met in the School of Architecture at the NC State College of Design and both graduated with a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture degree in May 2010.  We did study abroad together in Prague, Czech Republic while in school and since we graduated I have been working as an Architectural Intern/Designer at an architecture firm in Raleigh and John works for an Iphone app startup in Raleigh as Creative Director & Graphic Designer.

Our lovely bride gives us an overview of their 100% customized-to-them wedding:

We just wanted to have a big party from the start of all the planning. We wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet, and we also tried to make the reception less formal, doing introductions, dances & speeches at the beginning (we did not do cake cutting, garter toss, bouquet toss) in order to free the evening up for lots of dancing after dinner. The closest thing to a theme would be the color blue and cubes and we tried to approach everything with the idea that “less is more”.  This was carried throughout the designs for the graphics for the save the dates, invites, & programs, the flowers and the decorations.

The creative duo designed the eye-catching signs and stationery and hand-made all their decor! Here’s Kelly with the details:

Since we both went to architecture school and are used to being very hands on with making models and presentations we were really wanted to design the graphics for the save the dates, invitations, signs, name cards, programs, etc. We also wanted to make the decorations.

We made all of the cube lanterns over the dance floor out of wood dowels and rice paper and the colored cubes on the tables were spray painted wood dowels.

Those light cubes are made of awe. some.

We also were able to pick out a lot of the music that was played and picked a lot of 80’s & 90’s pop with some Bruce Springsteen, Queen & Prince thrown in too. We also wanted to have a photobooth so guests could have something fun to take home with them and we made our own logo to go on the photobooth strips that were printed.

Some parting insights from the couple:

Everything was a lot of work and literally took countless weeknights and weekends to do, we felt like we were in school again.  It was worth it though to be able to see it all set up on the wedding day and the party was really great and we had an awesome time and it seems that all of our guests did too which was our original goal!
