Vikki & Jason’s Intimate Meadowlark Gardens and Hotel Monaco Brunch Wedding

Vikki is from Scotland and Jason is from the US. They met one another in 2008 by chance while traveling in New Zealand — just how amazing is that? They honored their love in a lovely minimalist celebration surrounded by 17 of their closest family and friends and I’m delighted I can share it with you today.

I love how sweet this couple is! No really, wait ’til you see the rest of the pics. 🙂 We have Lisa Robinson of SoftBox Media Photography to thank for the gorgeous imagery on this page and here she is to tell us more about the celebration:

We met Jason many years ago while we all worked together at Apple Inc. Ian and I had found love, started our photography business, gotten married, and still managed to stay in touch with our old “Apple Family”. We were envious of Jason’s pending trip to New Zeland and expected him to come back with tons of great photos & stories, but when he came back having met a special someone named Vikki, we were all thrilled. Vikki, a native of Scotland, was vacationing in New Zeland as well. Call it fate, call it kismet, whatever you want. These two love birds flew half way around the world to find eachother! They celebrated their wedding with a beautiful, intimate ceremony at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA and then had a sweet brunch at the Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria. Country + City + Scotland + America = Love!

What an adorable couple, and don’t you just love Vikki’s short sassy bridal dress?! Our groom Jason is here to share their fateful chance encounter- intercontinental love story:

Our story is a bit of a doozy but I’ll try and give the super short version. I am American and Vikki is from Scotland. We met in New Zealand in 2008 while we were both traveling for the hell of it. Our paths crossed by chance on a bus one day. Pretty amazing chance meeting! We traveled together for about a month, then went our separate ways, only to realize we had something amazing and so we both returned to New Zealand 3 months later to spend another 8 months there together! Eventually we both returned to our homes and did the (VERY) long distance thing for a while. I proposed on a moonlit beach in Barbados in September 2010 and she moved here in February 2011 to start our lives together (full-time!). We were married on the morning April 22, 2011, the day after my 28th birthday.

A few details about their wedding in the groom’s own words:

We decided to keep our wedding very simple for a number of reasons, primarily because obviously Vikki’s entire friends and family couldn’t travel to America for the wedding so we wanted to try and keep it balanced. She had a handful of folks from Scotland arrive and so I had approximately the same number. I think it was 17 people total at the ceremony. Shortly after she arrived in February last year we took a walk through Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA and realized it was just a simple, yet beautiful area to get hitched. Perfect for a small party of people too! So we were able to rent our their gazebo which sits on a nice pond. Of course we weren’t so lucky with the weather! It drizzled a bit and was in the 40s! But everyone was so happy it didn’t matter much.
Afterwards, we had a wedding lunch in Old Town Alexandria at this boutique hotel called Hotel Monaco. The next evening, we had a larger reception with more of my friends held at our apartment building. In September, we went to Scotland for a week and held a similar larger party with her friends and family.

Both Vikki and I like to live life with as few complications as possible. Me especially — everyone calls me The Minimalist in the way I live my life. We’re not lazy or anything, and we like nice things, but we just try to live our lives in ways that cause the least stress possible. We want to enjoy life. So although part of the reason our ceremony was small was due to the circumstances, we wouldn’t likely have had a large affair anyway. We’ve heard enough horror stories from married friends about how stressful organizing their weddings were that we decided we wanted no part in that! So we had 17 people, got married outside in the morning, had a lunch with those closest to us and everything else was an afterthought! Instead of a giant cake for our day-after reception, we got a cupcake tower instead from a fantastic bakery in McLean, VA called Fluffy Thoughts. Vikki knows I love Mario (of Nintendo fame) stuff, so we decorated the tower with little figures from the Mario games and had Mario and the Princess on top.

Jason looks back and shares a few insights into one of the best decisions he’s ever made”

I’ve always been a overly rational, down-to-earth realist. You can ask anyone who knows me and they’ll say it’s true to a fault. So when I decided to travel BACK to New Zealand after spending a month there meeting a girl, I think most of my friends and family thought I had lost it! They were supportive, but it wasn’t a typical Jason move. But it ended up being the best gut feeling I ever had. It’s a overused, trite phrase, but when you know, you know.

I’m sincerely happy these two found one another because… well the photos speak for themselves. Just look at how in love they are! <3
