Thea & Ian’s All-American 4th of July DIY Wedding
Happy 4th of July to my dear readers in the US! Have fun celebrating your Independence Day! I have an extra special treat for you in the form of this gorgeous homemade backyard BBQ celebration bursting with American spirit and DIY red, white, and blue awesomeness! Thea has always been in love with fireworks and Ian is the epitome of patriotic so it was only fitting that their wedding took place on their favorite holiday, July 4th last year in Seattle, Washington to be exact.
Happy 1st anniversary you guys! These two are so obviously crazy for one another and I can’t thank Seattle wedding photographer Jenny GG enough for submitting this stunner of a feature. Here’s what she had to say about it:
Thea and Ian had a small but totally awesome wedding last 4th of July with great little touches and fireworks to boot! The 4th of july in Seattle was an amazingly gorgeous day. Thea and ian are an amazingly beautiful couple…specifically, i found their genuine expression of affection for each other to be amazing. They were total strangers to me before and now I think of them as friends. Great day…
On to the glorious eye candy…
Gorgeous bride Thea is here to tell us more about how she and Ian met:
I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. Ian grew up in the Boston area. We met about 7 years ago on Myspace, of all places. We talked on the phone a lot until I decided to fly to Boston to meet him in person. We spent a week together and had an instant connection. We flew back and forth a few more times until I decided to move in with him. We’ve been living together in the house his grandparents left him ever since. Took him awhile to pop the question, but now that we are officially married, we couldn’t be happier…in fact we have a little one on the way already, November 28th!
Ooh how perfectly wonderful guys, congrats!
Love how both their tats reflect their allegiance! Here are the deets on why they chose July 4 for their wedding day:
First of all, the 4th of July is our all-time favorite holiday. I love all things Americana, Ian is super patriotic, totally a military history buff, and honestly, who doesn’t love fireworks and BBQ? Also, this way he will never forget our anniversary! We had the wedding at my parents house, in a little town out in the country about 60 miles south of Seattle. We just wanted to have a laid-back wedding that also incorporated the holiday and for our friends and family to have fun.
The bride’s uncle Tom officiated the wedding, and he and her uncle Terry timed it so that fireworks went off as Thea and Ian shared their first kiss as a married couple.
… and here’s the photo to prove it!
Red, white and blue! Don’t you just adore Thea and her bridal party’s vintage frocks? (If you look closely you’ll see that the red & blue dresses have little sparrow tattoo-like accents on the shoulder area)
Almost everything was DIY and / or vintage:
I got my 1950′s dress from etsy, shoes from ebay, one of my friends made our cupcakes, the cupcake toppers were actually vintage salt and pepper shakers of James Madison and Betsy Ross, another friend did my hair, and my bridesmaids and I made our bouquets and center pieces from flowers we picked from my parents yard. We collected all the mason jars we could find around the house for vases. We made wooden signs from scrap wood for the ceremony and reception and also built a fire-pit for our custom “s’mores bar”.
My parents had a cool vintage bicycle that we decorated for a photo prop and we took Jenny down the street to get some amazing shots with Mt. Rainier in the background too. It was an amazing day thanks to our friends and family.
We just wanted it to be a totally casual fun day, with all our family and loved ones with us and I think we had just that.
Huge thanks to Jenny for sending her gorgeous images of this very creative wedding my way, and congratulations (and again, happy 1st anniversary) to Thea and Ian! Thanks for sharing your special day with us. Here’s wishing you guys a lifetime of married bliss.
