Jaclyn & Sebastian’s Cozy & Casual South Lake Tahoe Wedding

Kicking off the weekend is an intimate celebration on South Lake Tahoe that the bride & groom totally made their own — their ring bearer was their little dog, their bridesmaid was male, they had only the closest of family & friends around, the bride had on a short bustled dress and she and the groom wore matching custom sneaks!

Jaclyn is from Malaysia and Sebastian is Filipino. He lives in San Francisco, USA where he went to college and now works as a Pharmacist. The two met by fate in Hong Kong where they just happened to be at the same place at the same time. Yup they have a pretty amazing story but I am saving the details for later. The ceremony took place on a pier that juts out into Lake Tahoe which photographers JoAnne and Jason Marino of Imagine Photography (see our previously featured shoots by them or read their Behind the Lens q&a) say is one of the longest piers they’ve seen!

The Marinos were invited to Jaclyn and Sebastian’s wedding as guests so they didn’t plan on shooting (nor were they asked to shoot) any of it — they were there for a nice, relaxing weekend with friends. However, them being the awesome photographers they are, they couldn’t resist taking a few shots… and I’m so glad they did because now I can share the beautiful celebration with you! The camera work is gorgeous as always as you’ll see for yourself right about now.

Don’t you just love how these photos make it seem as if they have the place all to themselves? So romantic. And as mentioned earlier, these two have an amazing love story and guess what, we’ll get to hear about it from both their perspectives — how cool is that? First up is Jaclyn’s side of the story:

As corny as it may seem, the both of us met by chance at a bar in LKF* Hong Kong. He was there on an Asian holiday and to meet and hang out with his brother and I was there for work. The both of us have never been to LKF and we were pretty close to not going there as well. I thought he was this weird random guy (who could possibly be gay) though he was really friendly and nice to talk to. We shared a kiss and he promised that he will be back to see me. I thought I would never ever see him again. (We were both from different parts of the world, he is from the US and I am from Malaysia)

He made the effort to come see me numerous times and even once to surprise me for my birthday. I was smitten by his sweet gestures and I made plans to go over to visit him too. This went on for a few months and we both felt that we wanted more than what we had now. Keeping up with each other on different time zones and only via communication on Skype, FaceTime and whatsapp was not what we wanted for the long term.

So on 31st March the hubby proposed to me whilst I was on a trip with my friends to New York. And everything else just progressed from there.

* LKF stands for Lan Kwai Fong. Been there myself several times for business and leisure when I was working in advertising. (Best to avoid it at New Year’s, it gets pretty crowded!)

Because Jaclyn’s friends in Malaysia couldn’t come to the wedding, she asked one of the groom’s best friends to stand in as her maid of honor. The great thing is that he volunteered to wear a pink dress! Now that’s an awesome friend. 🙂

Awww I love the fact that their pet doggy was their ringbearer! Adorable!

Such a spectacular shot of the couple! It’s also time to hear Sebastian’s side of the story:

Lan Kwai Fong is quite a famous area in Hong Kong filled eclectic bars, restaurants, and high end shops. LKF is normally filled to the brim with a varied mix of Europeans, Americans, Australians, Hong Kong natives, Saiyans, Jedis, you name it. I have never seen such a small area house such a diverse group of young professionals.

Like my dear wife stated, I was close to not showing up and only did so thanks to my brother’s peer pressure tactics. I have never approached a stranger in any bar or club I have ever gone to, so the night I went up to Jaclyn was most definitely an anomaly. When I first saw her, I was drawn to her. I knew I had to talk to her, and gained the confidence to do so only after about 2 drinks past my regular limit and some heavy coaxing from my brother and his girlfriend at that time. And more drinking. I was James Bond with a better tan and minus the gun.

From that night on, it was a flurry of international traveling and rendezvous with Jaclyn at different parts of the world. Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, San Francisco, and New York just to name a few places.

I made a commitment in my mind when I first met Jaclyn and it was “to see this through.” I didn’t know what “this” was going to turn into until she said yes to marrying me on March 31st in Times Square, New York. I now know that “this” was going to be the start of the happiest time of my life.

I asked the lovely twosome to describe their wedding in a nutshell. Here’s what they had to say:

Jaclyn: Fun, beautiful location, and great company!

Sebastian: It was the most amount of fun, stress, and randomness that could be had within a 96 hour period without the help of some hard-core street drugs.

And now for some parting insights from the couple. Jaclyn advises:

Getting married is a pretty taxing and time consuming process. Best to get a wedding planner! Reduces the stress of planning and looking for the prefect dress and suit. It also helps reduce the bickering and tension between the bride and groom.

Sebastian adds:

As so many wiser men before me have said. “Happy wife, happy life.”
