Laura & Dan’s In-Bed-with-a-Muppet + Downtown Boston Stroll E-session

downtown Boston e-session

Laura and Dan are such a FUN couple and yes I made that judgment based on their e-session because it looks like they had a total blast shooting it! They began their session in their awesome bedroom (oooh that wall mural) where Kristin Chalmers Photography (see her previously featured work + interview) captured them snuggling under the covers… with a Dan-lookalike muppet to boot! I’ll let Kristin tell you the rest:

Dan and Laura’s engagement session took place on a beautiful summer day. I met them at their amazing Boston loft and we got started in their amazingly huge bedroom. While setting up I noticed a large plastic case and I did a double take. When I looked again, I saw this clone of the groom in Muppet form! It was a custom made Muppet of Dan, the groom. Being that Dan is teacher and an actor, I took full advantage of the situation and have a little fun with the whole thing. Laura is also a teacher and a lover of art, so they took me on an adventure through East Boston to a found object art installation park that was amazing. Their wedding will take place in May of 2013.

Alright, so how awesome were those photos with Dan’s mini-me muppet? Luckily lovely Laura is here to give us the shoot’s behind-the-scenes details:

When we first met Kristin, we were telling her about our apartment.  It’s a unique loft space outside of Boston, a former grocery store warehouse converted into an artist community.  The second she heard about our 15-foot ceilings and virtually floor to ceiling windows, she insisted we begin our shoot there!

On the day of the engagement shoot, we started in the bedroom.  We were playing around, jumping on the bed, when Kristin noticed something on Dan’s dresser.  A year before, when The Muppet Movie came out, FAO Schwartz had a promotion where you could get a Muppet custom-made.  Dan and I were spending the weekend in New York City and Dan insisted on going and getting one made in his likeness —  dubbed “Little D”.  Kristin instantly wanted to add it to our shoot as soon she saw it, and that’s when we began to get comfortable!  Since Dan trained to be an actor, he was so good, pretending that he’d caught me cheating with the Muppet.  I didn’t know what to do but laugh!  We had such a good time with it.

After our apartment, we went to Piers Park in East Boston.  We’d been before with friends and always thought fondly of it.  Everyone should go to Piers Park!  It’s across the harbor from Downtown Boston, offering the most spectacular views of the skyline at a beautiful park, next to a marina/sculpture park.  We had a wonderful time wandering through the park and the marina, listening to Kristin’s thoughtful and clever suggestions.

If you’re wondering how this adorable duo got together, here’s the story straight from Laura:

Dan and I met three years ago when we were both in grad school, getting our Master’s of Education at Lesley University in Cambridge.  We were interning at the same school.  We were just peers in the beginning, but one day, on a lark, I invited Dan to go to a play with me.  We had a blast, even ran into one of Dan’s high school teachers, but I didn’t think too much of it after that evening.  We knew we’d see each other at school, so we didn’t make any official plans to go out again.  But I guess Dan was hooked, since he called me two days later and asked me out on a real date!  I had read about this light show in Fort Point that I took him to, so imagine us wandering around this quiet neighborhood in the middle of February only to find this overpass with the lamest Christmas lights we’d even seen!  I wonder if Dan knew just how many crazy adventures I’d drag him on – and now for the rest of our lives!

One of the best adventures we had was last summer.  We spent 15 days on the West Coast – traveling from San Francisco to Vancouver.  Even though Dan had decided to propose in December of 2011, he waited until July to pop the question.  We were in Crater Lake, Oregon for a few days and believe me when I say it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth!  The last day there, we decided to hike up to this secluded waterfall and when we reached the end of the trail, we were all alone and Dan decided to do it!  We celebrated alone for a few minutes before another couple finally came along and took our picture!  One of the best and worst parts about it was that Crater Lake has virtually no telephone/cellphone/internet service, so we were able to keep the news to ourselves…for just a little while!  Obviously our friends and family were so thrilled when they got the calls – Dan’s parents knew he was going to ask on this day and said “we’ve been waiting all day for your call!”
