Behind the Lens: Shane & Jenny Reed of Reed Photography

Welcome to another Behind the Lens post where I interview a talented wedding photographer whom I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with. Every photographer has their own distinct style so the purpose of this series is to help you choose a photographer whose style best represents you. Thus I want you to meet them not as “vendors” but as potential friends who just so happen to have the skills to creatively chronicle your special day in pictures.

Meet Shane and Jenny Reed of Niagara-based Reed Photography

I first came to know about Reed Photography’s work via  Sheri & Denis’ Black & White Rock and Roll Winter Wedding sometime last year and from then on I’ve been a fan of their artistic non-obtrusive photography. Since then I’ve showcased a couple more weddings shot by them which you can see here.

There’s something about Shane and Jenny’s pictures that draw the viewer in and make her/him feel a sense of calm. The images, as you’ll see below, have a quiet and timeless beauty that don’t rely on trendy Photoshop effects — which says a lot about the husband and wife photo team really. It’s clear that they are dedicated to capturing moments as they happen in real life, skilfully framed and beautifully bathed in nature’s light.

I’m delighted to introduce you to Shane so you can get to know the photographers behind the gorgeous photos better.

Hello Shane & Jenny! Please tell us more about your wedding photography business.

We’re a husband and wife photography team with three amazingly beautiful kids including a 4 year old son and almost two year old identical twin girls. So home life is hectic but we wouldn’t want it any other way. We freelance out of our home in the beautiful Niagara Shorthills area of southern Ontario (near Niagara Falls). We’ve only been shooting weddings for a few years now and absolutely love it.

I initially started shooting bands, models and families when I got into photography and weddings were never a direction I wanted to go in. It’s funny where life unexpectedly takes you. Likewise Jenny never expected to be a photographer. She is a certified teacher and due to lack of work around here in her field I started to train her as my second shooter to save money as I branched into weddings. We fell in love with weddings and gained a fresh love and appreciation for each other in the meantime. It’s amazing to spend most of our weekends celebrating others joy and love with them and we’re happy that life took this unexpected twist. As far as our style we are natural light shooters because we believe God’s light is the best light. I would say our style could be deemed photojournalistic, however we have such a mix of styles it’s difficult to attach labels.

What’s the quirkiest wedding you’ve photographed?

It would have to be the campground wedding mentioned below as it was unexpected and such a blast.

The most unusual or unexpected location you’ve shot a wedding at?

The most unusual place was a campground only minutes from our house known for it’s massive one acre pool. It’s not a place you’d expect to shoot a wedding at, however at the end of the day it was surprisingly an awesome venue. The mix of quirky campground stuff, arcades, and natural wooded areas made it a interestingly unique and diverse place to shoot.

A wedding photography fad you will never follow?

We will never edit images with selective color because it makes us want to poke ourselves in the eye with a sharp stick. With that being said we don’t hold it against those who enjoy desecrating photos. ;)

Can you tell us what your wedding was like?

Our wedding was great as far as the celebration goes and the marrying of each other. We had a beautiful late lunch reception at a stunning winery restaurant in Niagara on the Lake. Most importantly we were surrounded by our loved ones which was amazing even if we do have some quirky family members. Our photos were sadly another story… hate em! We’re considering renewing our vows this year for our 10 year anniversary and getting some stellar photos from someone with mad crazy skills.

Barring budget, logic or reality, what would your dream wedding (to shoot) be like?

We are into simple things and love the outdoors. So we’d probably like something up north in the woods at a cottage on the lake with strings of lights and patio lanterns hanging everywhere. It would be an intimate affair with live acoustic music playing in the background of soothing songs from artists like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Sarah Harmer and Seal (his soul album). There would be one massive wooden table that would be shared by everyone. Add to that some sparklers, dancing under the moon and stars by a bonfire and some s’mores and you have yourself an amazing time.

Please name at least 5 songs off your dream wedding / reception playlist.

It Takes Two – Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock
For Once In My Life – Stevie Wonder
It’s A Man’s World – Seal
Gravity – John Mayer
Lodestar – Sarah Harmer

A book, movie or tv show you’d love to base a styled shoot on?

A Lord of the Rings shoot would be cool. Did that sound too nerdy?

Which celebrity or fictional couple’s wedding do you think would be a blast to photograph if you could?

This question is a tricky one as we don’t get too fired up with celebrities and don’t really get all of the hype. Those Duck Dynasty guys are pretty hilarious so I guess one of theirs.

If you weren’t a photographer now, what would you be?

Unemployed haha. My wife is a teacher and I originally went through for computer engineering but never finished. Thank goodness! I would have been miserable doing that. I think I would still be into something that gives me a creative outlet. I currently do a little graphic design so perhaps I would’ve gone in that direction. My wife would be making the best goodies in town using her gift of baking. Excuse me I need a cookie…

I hope you all enjoyed meeting Shane of Reed Photography! The beautiful, dreamy images on this page are just a taste of what he and his wife Jenny can offer!
