Elsa & Alex’ Dia de los Muertos Wedding Aboard the Queen Mary

Dia de los Muertos Wedding on the Queen Mary

Happy Friday everyone! I know how a lot of you love quirky themed weddings — in fact the Dia de los Muertos themed shoot I blogged a couple of years ago still rakes in the views even now — so today I have another intimate Day of the Dead wedding to share. A few of you may wonder why some couples choose to do such a theme. Some do it to “be different” and there’s nothing wrong with that. In this wedding’s case however, the reason is more personal. The lovely bride Elsa explained that her Nana whom she was very close to had passed away and so she wanted to incorporate her presence around their union. Her supportive husband Alex was all for it and even suggested that they have the reception aboard the Queen Mary which they had decorated true to the theme with creative DIY details.

We have Jason Burns Photography for the beautiful photos and here he is with the inside story:

When I first met Elsa and Alex they were telling me about the Day of the Dead themed wedding they had planned for November 2nd and I could not wait to photograph it! They’re absolutely amazing and so much fun to be around. Elsa and Alex are perfect for each other with their amazing personalities and easygoing attitudes; they were truly a joy to work with. Elsa being the crafty talented person she is made a lot of the little amazing details herself from invitations to hand painted tiles for wedding favors that were perfect touches for their wedding. I really loved working with this couple, their family and friends and was so happy to be there to capture this unique wedding.

I thought it would be best to let Elsa herself take you through their wedding from this point on. Here she is with their love story:

My husband Alex and I met in 2000. He is a mail carrier and used to deliver to my previous job were I worked as a front office medical assistant. For a year or so our only conversation was “Hi” and “Have a great day, bye” hahahaha until September ’02. He asked me out and we went to the movies then had some coffee at Starbucks and became the best of friends. We both didn’t care for marriage but after 9 years we decided to move in together. On August 8,2011 he says “lets go to Disneyland” we get on the Alice in Wonderland ride and he starts with his sweet speech and I’m like “what is going on?” and he proposes to me. I didn’t answer him right away, I WAS IN SHOCK! but then I relaxed and said YES.

My Nana loved to attend mass at the Holy Family church in Wilmington so we both agreed we couldn’t chose a better place to be blessed at.

I did a lot of DIY. I did our wedding invitations, ring bearer pillow & dress hanger. I made my own toss garter & sash. I also decorated our frame that went by the sign in book. I decorated our basket that had my handmade tears of joy envelopes to give out as favors at the church. I made my own wedding favors (stamped coasters). I also made a bottle cap charm with my Nana’s picture that was put on my bouquet so I would have her walk with me down the aisle.

At the reception I had a plate setting for my Nana were I put her picture and a white rose and a pomegranate because the last time I saw her that was the fruit we shared.

The venue and cake was my husband’s idea. When he asked me how would you like our reception at the QUEEN MARY I was ecstatic, it went perfect with our theme and his ideas for the cake was amazing.

I decoupaged bottles for decoration. I also made my own Mr. & Mrs. wedding banner.

We rented a 1927 Packard which gave our theme a unique final touch. We are both so happy to have found one another and be able to marry a true friend and companion of lifetime (sigh).

Words of advice, take time to do your homework these days technology is at your fingertips, read thru reviews and use your instincts. Take time to breath, it can become overwhelming, specially when your doing a lot of DIY things by yourself. Also enjoy it because you wont remember anything the day of but when you finally get your pictures and video back you will realize how beautiful everything came out and all the smiles everyone had and how blissful you and your husband looked that is all that matters.
