Robyn & Paul’s Hip Date in an Ice Cream Shop and Record Store E-session

ice cream shop e-session

You guys already know how much I love lifestyle e-sessions… As much as I love creative, witty, and “themed” ones (with elaborate props even), I have to say that going on a date accompanied by a photographer you’re comfortable with is probably the easiest and most natural way to capture you at your most relaxed.

That said, today you will meet the lovely Robyn and Paul through a day in their life as a couple with their genuine moments beautifully photographed by Bri McDaniel. Bri had a little bit more to say about the e-session:

Fun engagement session in downtown Athens, Georgia. It felt like a hip date from the ’50s–visiting record stores, sharing ice cream near the busy Athens street. There were plenty of laughs and endearing moments.

Aww, how sweet is this photo of Robyn and Paul? Beautiful Robyn kindly shared how they met too:

The saying “chances are you’ve already met the person you will spend the rest of your life with” couldn’t ring more true for us. I first met Paul 10 years ago at our alma mater, Lincoln University. Although it was an extremely brief encounter, I remember it like it was yesterday. He does not remember this encounter at all, but he does remember noticing that I was ‘cute’ on my Facebook page a couple of years later. And of course, I have no recollection of even being his Facebook friend. Fast forward to 2010 and Paul saw a picture of me that my friend posted on Twitter, he again noted that I looked ‘cute’ but this time we actually followed each other on Twitter (something that we both remember). Again, nothing much came out of this virtual encounter, that is, until 6 months later…Thanksgiving weekend. I randomly initiated conversation with Paul on Twitter, which led to days of direct messages and then to many overnight sessions of Facebook chatting. It was then I recognized him as the strikingly handsome guy who I met on the steps of University Hall at Lincoln University 7 years prior. I got very excited and asked him “Don’t you remember me from Lincoln? OMG this is crazy!” There was no response for about 5 minutes (which Paul later told me he was freaking out during, thinking I was a psycho stalker or something). Finally, he confessed that he did not remember her from Lincoln, but he could have sworn that they were Facebook friends prior to that night. We spent the rest of the night reminiscing on separate yet common experiences we both had at Lincoln, and wondered why our paths didn’t cross in a more meaningful way sooner. To say we immediately hit it off would be an understatement. We became instantaneously inseparable and talked ALL the time, although we weren’t even in the same state, and at times not even in the same country! Then we finally officially met for our very first date on January 1st, 2011. This was just the icing on the cake and we knew for sure that this was it. The rest was history!

More about the twosome:

I am still in awe every day that we’ve been so blessed to have been continuously placed in each other’s lives until we got it right! Our personalities are so different that when we first started talking, a romantic relationship was the furthest thing from both our minds! He is ultra low-key, has the most chill personality ever, he is very genuine and has THEE biggest heart in the world. He is also the self-proclaimed last of a dying breed, born and bred, real New Yorker! On the other hand, I am an island girl at heart. Born and raised in St. Lucia, West Indies, and came to America to pursue a higher education. I don’t think I have a chill bone in my body, lol. I’m naturally quite hype, and comical most of the time. I love to laugh, dance, sing and I often don’t care where I am or who’s watching. Although we have many differences, we learned during the course of our relationship that the core of who we are as people is what brought us together.  Our greatest commonality is the vulnerable love in our hearts. We are truly the answers to each other’s prayers spoken only with our hearts. We’re both extremely silly, have a passion for the arts, love the same movies, we’re both ‘foodies’, shared numerous mutual friends, and even went to the same college!

Robyn details how their e-session reflects the two of them:

Our engagement session was located in Athens, GA, which is where I am pursuing my doctorate. Because we wanted our wedding to truly be a fusion of our two lives and cultures, we wanted the location of our wedding and engagement photos to be in the middle of our two worlds (New York and St. Lucia). Athens represents where we started our lives as ‘one’ and  where we shared the bulk of our courtship memories.  What made the session ‘us’ is not only the location, but the fact that this session was like spending a day in the life of Robyn and Paul. We incorporated activities that we do and enjoy on a day-to-day basis, and did not shy away from acting silly because that’s who we are! Honestly, we did not even remember that Bri was shooting us as it was like hanging out with a friend all day. We went to Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream shop which is where we go after every date we went on in Athens. We also went to Paul’s favourite record shop in Athens and took part in some ‘crate digging’. This is another activity that always happens when we’re just walking downtown…he always looks for that one novelty record and sometimes he gets really lucky and finds 2! The next stop was off to an abandoned train off the tracks near a Jittery Joes warehouse. As a true ‘Brooklynite’ Paul is really into urban cultures such as the sneaker culture and graffiti artists. Thus, we played the graffiti culture into our session and I pretended to be his ‘look out’. We had a blast! Lastly, we got to rep our organizations that we also hold dear to our hearts, and our Lincoln University mascot, Lionel. I am a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and he is a member of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. We were able to put on our organization jackets and goof around like we were back in undergrad once again. This was truly a memorable shoot and I can’t thank Bri enough for capturing our raw emotions and love in this way. I hope you enjoyed viewing it as much as we enjoyed our session!
