Kim & JR’s Peacock-Hued Bright Lights Big City Wedding

I loved the shots of Kim and JR and their bridal party against the NYC night skyline the instant photographer Natasha Esguerra showed me their wedding. I thought they gave their celebration a chic urban vibe which also suited the couple’s fun, easygoing personalities to a T. Their invites & favors in fact had graphics of the skyline as well, and the rich peacock colors  they chose to go with complemented the modern city motif perfectly. They also chose to do things their own way — they had their ceremony at a restaurant, their runner was printed with lyrics to a favorite song, string lights instead of fresh flowers decorated the aisle, and a waffle truck instead of cake provided dessert. Many more personal touches were present but I will let Kim tell you all about them herself later. Meanwhile… photos, yay!

How cute is this bridal party photo? The lovely bride Kim will now tell you all about how they made their wedding completely theirs:

Laughter has always been our saving grace throughout our relationship. From dating to the present, we always find it important to make each other laugh every day. We’re fun loving, easy going people who like to be adventurous at times but also home-bodies too. Sharing the same faith has definitely been the most vital part of our relationship, the family that prays together stays together!

We definitely wanted our wedding to reflect our personal sense of style. We centered around the peacock as a focal point, especially for our color scheme, wanting vibrant and lively energy to shine throughout the afternoon into the night.

I always had envisioned a runner with lyrics to our favorite song that can “guide” me down the aisle as I pass every word. I also had a vision to use lighting during the church ceremony as opposed to flowers.

Saving money was a huge concern to us. We were able to save tons of money by foregoing fresh flowers for the ceremony and reception, not hiring a DJ, and by having our reception on a Monday night as opposed to a weekend. Our custom runner was done by an artistic friend of ours which would have otherwise cost us hundreds of dollars, our invitations done by my talented brother, also saving us hundreds, and our wedding video was edited by my other skillful brother which ended up saving us thousands.

We also decided to not go the traditional route of a garter/ bouquet toss, and cake cutting. As opposed to the cake cutting, we did a Viennese hour in addition to renting a dessert truck, Wafels & Dinges, who’s specialty is Belgian wafels.

Rather than dancing, we asked a few friends and family to sing for us as well as doing several speeches, which to us, meant a lot more being able to hear how people felt about us, as well as being able to see our relationship from their perspective.

Words of advice from the newlyweds:

The advice I’d like to share that I’ve learned throughout this whole process is to just be true to yourself in regards to your style and what you really want out of your wedding. We tend to try and please everyone else, basing our whole wedding around what other people may or may not like, what they may say, or how they may judge, when in reality, the day is really about the union of you and your future spouse.
