Kelly & Jimmy’s Charming Vintage Shabby Chic DIY Wedding
Why hello, Friday! If you visited the blog earlier this week, I apologize for the bandwidth exceeded error message. All’s fine now, thankfully, so here’s a lovely wedding feature to cap off the week.
This adorable couple might seem familiar to you — that’s because I featured their fun and cute e-session in Oakland just a few months ago. Kelly and Jimmy have since tied the knot and today you’ll be seeing their beautiful wedding filled with charming shabby chic elements DIYed by the artistic bride herself! Think lace, brooches, doilies, floral china, and the cutest pair of mint green shoes which, incidentally inspired their vitnage theme and color motif.
We have C Wagner Photography & Design to thank for the gorgeous images. Enjoy!
We’ve already met Kelly & Jimmy through their colorful e-session in Oakland but here’s a little bit more about them:
Jimmy and I met 7 years ago at a bar. That night I juggled oranges for him (really I just threw them around because I don’t know how to juggle) and needless to say I left him with a lasting impression. We spent about 6 months together but our lives were taking us in different directions and we decided to go our separate ways. Luckily we had formed a good enough bond that we remained really good friends and I knew in my heart that one day we would be back together. That one day came 3 years ago and we have been inseparable since. In the last 3 years we have built a beautiful life together that has included playing on a soccer team together, going on a European road trip, going on lots of weekend getaways, doing lots of hiking and even some running together, going to lots of baseball games (me an A’s fan and him a Giants fan, a healthy rivalry) and countless other fun things. We work in the same field working with adults with developmental disabilities so it’s a wonderful passion to share and we plan a lot of outings with our clients. We just got back from a very adventuresome honeymoon in New Zealand where we jumped off buildings (the skytower in Auckland) hiked, went on boat rides, explored caves, went to Hobbiton, bungee jumped, went ziplining, ran a marathon (Jimmy) and a 10k (Kelly) and so many other little adventures. It’s how we plan on spending out lives together, living it fully and enjoying it together. Maybe not quite as exciting all the time, but life is what you make of it. Our lives are incredibly full and I couldn’t ask for a better partner to spend my life with.
About the wedding in the lovely Kelly’s own words:
Our wedding was an amazing day. Our color scheme was set by a cute pair of wedding shoes that my future sister in law got me. They were mint green and had a vintage feel so that immediately set the tone to our wedding. We carried the vintage theme throughout our wedding with vintage floral china and doilies and touches of lace. I’d say if you were to put a name to it, it would be shabby vintage DIY.
I personalized our wedding in many ways. The majority was DIY. I made my brooch bouquet, my bridesmaids fabric flower bouquets and the fabric button boutonnieres for the groom and groomsmen.
I made the center pieces, all the décor, spent a lot of time shopping at thrift stores to find all the right floral china, I made the bridesmaids jewelry and even made the flower girls tutu! I utilized Etsy a lot for all of the other touches so that I didn’t have that typical everybody-has-seen-it-before wedding.
We also wrote the ceremony together, kind of. We used a book that has a lot of different writings and ideas and used those to put together a ceremony that was personalized to us and had the important parts of marriage to us highlighted in it. It really helped us understand what we wanted and what was important to us in a marriage and I think it helped us grow in many ways.
A few words of advice:
Accept help! I have a hard time accepting or asking for help and it caused more stress that I needed. Hire a for real wedding coordinator, even a day of. Your friends can only help so much. Your wedding is something to enjoy and that is hard to do when you are trying to control and run the show.
Huge thanks to Cherlyn for sending these beautiful images my way, and congratulations Kelly and Jimmy! I wish you a lifetime of married bliss! 🙂
