Jessica & Craig’s Cozy and Colorful Picnic Party Wedding with an Egg Hunt

Jessica and Craig planned their wedding around a $5,000.00 budget so almost everything was DIY — from the bouquet to the decor. Their reception was a potluck picnic party which they kept relaxed and cozy by having just close family and friends around. The event was beautifully captured by Ingrid Chang with Jerry Yoon Photographers and here she is with a few words about the day:

This was one of the most casual weddings we have captured. They took their 30 or so guests to the Middle Shoreline Harbor Park in Oakland, walked them up a little nondescript field, and said their vows. Afterwards, everyone BBQed up some meat, did a little egg hunt (it was Easter weekend), and played lawn games. They even tore apart an octopus piñata.

Here’s a little bit about the couple’s love story in the lovely bride’s own words:

We originally knew each other in 7th grade, reconnected in 2000 on MySpace and moved in together two weeks after he came to visit me in the Bay Area (and one of those two weeks he was out of town).  Five years later we were engaged and now nine years later we’re still living in the same apartment we moved into after those first two weeks.

Jessica shares some details about their wedding + how they made it truly theirs:

We had $5000 for the whole thing.  Once the photographer, dress and rings were purchased, we were already over budget.  So we had a pot luck at a park with no reservation fee.  It was Easter weekend so we had an egg hunt that was definitely the highlight.

I don’t like weddings.  So I basically planned a picnic party that happened to be my wedding reception.  So there wasn’t any energy wasted on how weddings “should” be.  My husband and I bought games on Amazon that we knew we’d use again for pincics in the future.  We actually only had immediate family and 2 friends at the ceremony itself.  Everyone else was just at the party afterwards.  To facilitate conversation among guests, I made tags with their names and a “fun fact” that people really enjoyed.  Things like “Jessie’s best friend from preschool” or “first time visiting Oakland” made it easier for people to talk and connect the dots on who each other was.

All decorations and set up was just by me and some flea market sales.  No event coordinator or anything.

Advice from the bride:

Pay for a “day of” event coordinator.  Not all wedding planners offer this service, but it would have been nice if I didn’t have to make sure things were moving along.
