Halley & Josh’s Bright and Colorful Modern Vintage Wedding

Halley and Josh had a bright and colorful wedding that managed to combine her and his opposite tastes — she’s all about casual and contemporary and he’s for the traditional and formal. Together, and with the help of their vendors, they merged the classic and hip via a modern vintage themed party dotted with personal touches that celebrated their love for each other as well as who they are as individuals.

The motif was reflected in their eye-catching portraits as well as their elements like the gorgeous typography laden letterpress invites, their warehouse-y loft-like venue,  and the handmade old-timey details that decorated their reception area.

I love how even this cute, funky shot of the lovely couple is a mix of vintage and modern!

Chicago wedding photographer Heather Parker is responsible for the awesome images you see on this page. She remembers the event fondly:

I was hired as the wedding photographer for Halley and Josh’s wedding and I love the challenge of shooting in dark warehouse spaces. Halley and Josh were high school sweethearts and they made sure their guests had a fabulous time. The warmth and joy seen at their wedding made it so easy to photograph.

The story of how Halley and Josh met is on their handsome letterpress invitation but since the text is too tiny for us to read, you’ll see a bit later on when you scroll down that Halley has offered us the condensed version. 🙂

Found on their Facebook statuses that morning:

Halley: Hey cutie, wanna get married today?
Josh: I could do that. Let’s say around 6:30?

I would’ve totally “liked” that cute exchange, wouldn’t you?  🙂

The couple had a first look…

Here’s the beautiful bride to give us the concise version of their love story:

Josh and I met the summer before my freshman year of high school (2001!) and started dating the following summer. We’ve been together ever since … through high school, 4 years at Indiana university, traveling to Europe together, getting a Great Dane (Minnie!) and moving into Chicago after we graduated.

Halley shares some details about how she came up with their wedding’s look:

When we pulled up to Gallery 1028 the first time, I didn’t even want to go in (my mom made me). But once inside, I fell in love with the warehouse look. I’ve said before that Gallery 1028 can go two ways : “super modern” (clean lines, unusual colors, etc.) or very “vintage Chicago”. I went with “vintage chicago”… white milk glass vases for the flowers (all of which I purchased on etsy and ebay!), all roses, simple votive candles. I wanted something simple and beautiful, vintage inspired.

Halley shares how she and Josh personalized their wedding to suit their opposite tastes:

Josh and I had very different visions. His more traditional, mine more contemporary and informal. In the end, we had a nice blend of tradition and fun … a “typical” wedding ceremony, but conducted by one of our oldest friends. We did the Hora, but had a choreographed first dance to Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me.” We tossed the bouquet and garter, but did so to Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson respectively.

Together, we’re a perfect blend of personalities which was reflected in our wedding.

Josh and I wanted our wedding to feel very intimate, even with 140ish guests, and most importantly, fun! We wanted everyone to feel like they knew us and our personalities, which was why our invitation design was important. At the actual wedding, we didn’t want it to feel too stuffy or formal … it was more like a great party celebrating our love!

One of my biggest concerns was letting our wedding “get away from us” … worrying too much about the details and making it perfect, instead of focusing on each other, our love, and the fun the night would bring. In the end, our wedding was perfect for us. i wouldn’t change a thing … well, maybe i’d try not to step on and rip my dress. 🙂

Thank you so much Heather for sending this beautiful wedding my way, and congratulations to Halley and Josh! Thank you for sharing your special day with us. 🙂

  1. What a gorgeous, fun couple! I love the funky warehouse space, and the playful touches like the groomsmen’s socks. Halley’s loose, flowing hair makes a lovely counterpoint to her formal frock. And most importantly, everyone looks like they’re having a great time.
    Congratulations you two.

  2. I agree, everyone looks like they had a blast! Thanks for stopping by Mileta. 🙂

  4. such a fun wedding! I LOVE the groomsmen’s socks! The choice of a very bright color seems to go well with their personality and the mood of the event. They must have been very pleased with the outcome.
