Denise & LJ’s Techno Music Party in a Vineyard Wedding

Denise is a vocalist and LJ is a local DJ. Together they make really awesome techno music which served as the inspiration for their wedding details and the colors they used. Their funky DIY celebration came complete with rave party essentials such as glow sticks, neon colored rave shades, a cake with a topper shaped like headphones, and of course, a DJ booth.

Their wedding had a lot of personal handmade touches: the flowers were wrapped by the bride and bridesmaids with glittery pink ribbon from Michael’s. Denise saved empty bottles of wine and used them for center pieces.  Pink and yellow paper lanterns and glow sticks decorated the outdoor patio. Instead of the mothers lighting the candle, Denise’s Aunt and LJ’s Mom used a bottle of red and a bottle of white wine from Bluemont Vineyards to symbolize the unity of both families. Denise’s engagement ring and wedding band are her mother’s.

There’s actually a touching backstory behind Denise & LJ’s special day. Photographer Anna Bruce who is responsible for the delightful photos on this page shares it with us:

LJ proposed to Denise around the two year anniversary of her mother’s passing. It was a very difficult time for her because Denise’s mom was her family. Denise was crying and told LJ that she felt so alone. LJ told Denise that he would be right back with some water and when he returned he got down on one knee and said “I love you and you will never be alone” and he proposed to her. They got married one year later around the anniversary of her mother’s passing so that it would be a happy time instead of sad.

The beautiful Denise is on hand to tell us more about herself and LJ. She also intimates the sweet, moving story behind the proposal:

LJ is a music producer and a DJ and I am studying Mental Health Counseling along with doing some vocals for LJ from time to time.  We both love music and the kind of music we listen too (Electronic Dance Music) which is mostly associated with raves and glowsticks.

We met in 2006, we felt a spark but it was too soon to start dating since he was moving to Florida for graduate school.  In 2008, we “met” again after my mother passed away.  Without him and his help with my grief I don’t think I would have gotten though.  We dated till 2010 when he proposed to me on the anniversary of my mothers death because wanted to replace a sad memory with a good one.

I love the happy smiles! Denise tells us how their celebration reflected who they are:

We had the wedding at a vineyard because we both love wine and when we both went to see the venue we both looked at each other and knew it was the place. We wanted our wedding to not necessarily have a theme but to more or less showcase who LJ and I are.  Definitely not “traditional”.  For example I opted not to do the traditional Pachelbel’s Canon for the wedding party march and the Here Comes the Bride. For the procession for the wedding party and the bride we used Marry You by Bruno Mars but sung by the Glee Cast.

Those hot pink and yellow rave shades definitely give their couple portraits a groovy techno vibe!

The couple made sure to keep their wedding simple and stress-free:

We didn’t have elaborate centerpieces or a fancy sit down dinner.  I got flowers from Whole Foods and used empty wine bottles as vases.  We surrounded the flowers with our favors, CD’s, and some glowsticks.  I also got the flowers used in the ceremony from Whole Foods as well.

Their techno party theme was carried out through their details: for favors LJ made CD’s with songs chosen by the two of them including their first dance song. Their black and white cake had an edible topper made in the shape of headphones with their names on the ear pieces.

A few more details from the lovely bride:

The food was a buffet style and people were welcome to sit where they wanted.  We didn’t want people to be told where to sit.  It was less of a headache for both of us too to have the guests sit where they want.

The best part of the wedding was that we had so many friends willing to help us out with their specialty.  Such as Anna did our photography, our friend Aimee did my make up and our friend Carol did our hair.  We had our friend Craig DJ our wedding and my friend Dina let me borrow her veil.

We were told by several people that our wedding had such a great family and warm feeling.  That was most definitely a feeling we were going for!

I recommend to future brides and grooms to not stress on the details.  Do what they want and how they want it no matter who is paying for it.  (We paid for our wedding ourselves.)
