Paula & Marco’s Intimate Wedding in Scenic Douro River Valley

Happy Friday! By now you know that I love featuring weddings in all shapes, sizes, and cultures because I want to showcase inspiration from everywhere. Thus, today I am taking you to the picture-perfect Douro River Valley in Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where beautiful and madly-in-love twosome Paula and Marco chose to exchange their vows in.  To better soak in the day (and one another), they only had a dozen guests and spent the rest of the afternoon strolling in and around the scenic valley.  I’m letting this breathtaking photo give you a small taste of what’s to come…

Isn’t this shot just gorgeous? We have Kerry & Luis of Piteira Photography, a husband & wife photo team, to thank for this lovely, lovely feature. Here’s what they had to say about the wedding:

The fact that their wedding was so small (only 12 guests) meant that the day was much more relaxed, without any of the usual wedding protocol, and since photography was something that was very important to them, it gave us the time and freedom to spend lots of time with them. They drove us around all over the place, to some of their very favourite spots in the valley and surrounding mountains and we had such a great time with them that we completely lost track of the time… it was only when we got back to their house for cake and champagne that we realized we had been gone for 4 hours taking photos!

This wedding still stands out for us as one of our very favourite and as cliché as it sounds, this is really one of the driving reasons for us to be doing what we do… the opportunity to meet and work with wonderful, creative people, people who totally get your artistic vision and trust you completely… this is what wedding photography is about, for us.

Paula is such a stunning bride! Lucky for us she’s here to share her and Marco’s love story*:

We first met in 2002, we had both just started the same course in university (Tourism) and were in the same year. One afternoon in January we didn’t have classes and took the opportunity to go for a walk in the mountains together with several other students from our class. And it was there in the mountains that he asked me “will you be my girlfriend?” Very old fashioned, but I loved it, and that was how it all started!

From that point onwards we were inseparable, 4 years of university and then another 5 before we started talking about marriage.

*Thank you Kerry for kindly bridging the language barrier. 🙂

Such a solemn, simple, and meaningful celebration. Paula shares more:

Our first thoughts about a wedding was to have a small ceremony with only the closest of friends and family, those who had been with us since forever and who were an important part of our lives together.

The next most important thing to consider was the location. We live in the Douro river valley, one of the most scenic and beautiful landscapes in Portugal, and we both work in the tourism industry, so it made perfect sense for us to have our wedding there, seeing as we are familiar with many of the gorgeous features of the area and it is a place that is close to our hearts.
