Joanne & Drew’s Playful and Artistic Ravinia Wedding

Happy Monday everyone! Hot on the heels of Friday’s comic book wedding is another creative celebration filled with happy smiles, dreamy imagery, stunning art and overflowing love! Lovely couple Joanne & Drew had a beautiful family affair of a wedding in Ravinia, home to a yearly summer music festival. With the bride’s musical background and the groom’s artistic flair, the talented duo put together a fun and meaningful event that was 100% their own.

I loved this wedding the moment I set my eyes on it and we have Jennifer Wiley of Chicago-based JWiley Photography, responsible for the gorgeous photos you see on this page, for making this wonderful feature possible. Jen remembers the event quite fondly:

J&D celebrated their official wedding ceremony in the company of all their friends & family at Ravinia.  Joanne has a musical background, and Drew is a graphic artist.  And now as I’m writing this I recall how they expressed these components of their personalities both at their small backyard ceremony in September & on their wedding day.  In September, during their vows, Joanne sang to Drew and it was beautiful.  Drew, not to be outdone, made a sketch in the air with his finger illustrating his love for her.  (I think only Joanne could see it.)  For their wedding, the event was held at the music venue Ravinia, a location meaningful to Joanne’s family, and Drew created all of the letterpress stationery himself!  I think it’s wonderful that a song and and an impromptu air sketch can speak to the uniqueness of a couple in a microcosmic way,  in the same was that a whole venue & hours poured into handmade invitations are a tangible expression of a couple’s passion.  But the funniest part of the day?  The cardboard car with cans tied to it that Drew just “whipped up” the day before the wedding.  It was like, “Okay, we’re done being fancy now.  PARTY TIME IN OUR CARDBOARD CAR!  WOOO!”  You guys have a wonderful sense of humor.  You rock.

There’s so much to love about this wedding starting with the fabulous invitation suite the creative groom Drew, senior designer at Ceci New York, illustrated and designed…

Isn’t our bride a beauty? Let’s get to know the couple a bit better. Joanne is here to share the super cute story of how they got together:

Drew and I met through a friend in NYC and were instantly connected – “best friends for life” as I put it then. During a 14-hour bus ride between Toronto and New York, we discovered each other’s playful nature and sense of adventure which has sustained our relationship throughout the years. Drew proposed on the top of the Wonder Wheel in Coney Island to my surprise and delight.

They had a first look…

What a playful duo! Joanne’s back to tell us more about their wedding’s theme:

We decided early-on that our theme would be “hilarious” – a reminder to not take anything too seriously and fill the event with joy. Drew is an illustrator and designed a comic book as our Save-the-Date, which told our story and set the scene for our wedding.  Music is very important to us and played a big part in our wedding, from the venue (Ravinia, home to a summer music festival) to the band (live music was a must).

Don’t you just adore Drew’s whimsical drawings? Joanne sure does! She shares:

Drew’s creativity led to two of my favorite parts of the wedding… the signing of the ketubah and our entrance into the reception. For the Ketubah, Drew created a one-of-a-kind piece of art with his unique flair. I said I wanted a tree, he wanted a tuba (get it… Ke-tuba…) and so we had both! The ketubah ceremony was incredibly meaningful and now we have a beautiful and fun memento from our ceremony to hang on a wall in our home.

As you’ve seen, the couple infused their celebration with so many personal touches!

We both come from big families and wanted to include everyone including our many nieces and nephews. They were an integral part and opened the ceremony by holding hands and announcing “Welcome to Joanne and Drew’s Wedding.” We knew our wedding would be big and wanted to make sure that it felt like us — fun, full of love, and lots of silly.

LOVE this! So fun and quirky!

For our entrance into the reception, Drew surprised us all by creating a giant cardboard card, complete with window and tin cans hanging off the back! He didn’t tell anyone so you can imagine the looks on everyone’s faces when we ran into the room in our cardboard car. It was the best!

And now, some parting insights and advice from the bride:

I am so happy to look back on our wedding and remember all the smiles, the laughter, the love, the fun. We were so lucky to have our families and friends surrounding us, filling us with joy. Nothing’s simple about planning a wedding, but if you can remember to love each other throughout the process, I think it sets the right tone for a lifetime of happiness.
