Indie Wedding Music: Wouldn’t It Be Nice (Beach Boys Cover) by Saint Etienne

wouldn't it be nice by saint etienne As previously mentioned on this blog, I LOVE Saint Etienne so this week’s indie wedding tune is another tune from UK indie dance-poppers. Things are looking bright for the trio this year — they have a new album out (Words And Music) and they also took part in Pet Sounds Revisited, a free CD from Mojo Magazine featuring covers of songs from the Beach Boys‘ 1966 album Pet Sounds.

Confession: I’m not really a fan of the Beach Boys but I can’t deny that I’ve bopped to one (or five) of their songs in some of them beach parties circa I don’t remember. I’ll have to agree though that Wouldn’t It Be Nice is a delightful song, and I was also pleasantly surprised that the lyrics are very wedding appropriate! If you’re not familiar with it, here’s part of the lyrics:

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through
Happy times together we’ve been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
Wouldn’t it be nice

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true
Baby then there wouldn’t be a single thing we couldnt do
We could be married
And then we’d be happy

Wouldn’t it be nice…

And so without further ado, here’s Saint Etienne’s wonderful take on the Beach Boys song. It starts out soft and acapella, progresses into an infectious toe-tapping bossa nova groove and then fades out ever-so-gently. Armed with Sarah Cracknell’s gorgeous soothing vocals, I think this song is the perfect soundtrack for lazy summer days and breezy summer weddings — beach setting preferred but not required. 🙂 (now wouldn’t that be nice? )

Listen to it below:

Can you imagine it playing in your wedding? I honestly think it makes a lovely processional song. If you like it, as of this writing the track can still be downloaded on SoundCloud.
