Rachel & Max’s Dr. Who-inspired Engagement Session

Today I have another geektastic treat for you in the form of a unique, quirky, and sweet engagement session featuring Rachel and Max, a couple of science fiction fans. They brought along some Dr. Who-inspired props to the shoot including the trademark long scarf (scarves in this case) handmade by the bride-to-be’s grandmother which made for some really fantastic photos, as you will see shortly.

What a great shot! We have Jennifer Brindley of JBe Photography to thank for this super cool engagement sesh and here’s what she had to say about it:

Rachel and Max are two super unique, smart folks who share an affinity for Dr. Who, sharp clothes and general fun and goofiness. When they said they wanted to bring along some Dr. Who inspired props, I was so excited! Rachel’s grandma made the scarves, which made it even more romantic and sweet.

Don’t you just love their style? It’s time to meet the lovely duo. Here’s Max with the adorable story of how they met:

Rachel and I met in 2005, during our first year at Carleton College in Northfield, MN. She was swing dancing in a mutual friend’s tiny dorm room when I joined in. I fell for her the moment that I saw her, but she remained fairly oblivious for the better part of a year. Eventually, after acting in two plays, taking two classes, and becoming good friends, I got up the gumption to kiss her. The rest, as they say, is history.

What a beautiful pair these two make! Rachel’s here to discuss the story behind the Dr. Who inspiration:

When we first got engaged, a planning guide suggested that we choose three words to represent our relationship. We wrote our words separately and yet we both said that we wanted a “playful,” “quirky,” and unapologetically “geeky” marriage. In many ways, using Doctor Who in our engagement shoot captures all three qualities at once. Max and I share an appreciation for science fiction and the references add a subtle layer of nerdiness for those in the know. However, on a more basic level, the show isn’t about the time travel and the gadgetry. It’s about using humor, optimism, and loyalty to tackle the toughest problems in the universe, and what marriage couldn’t use that kind of inspiration?

Love that analogy! As a matter of fact I can actually feel the humor, optimism, loyalty — and devotion of course — between Rachel and Max in this set of gorgeous photos!

As for those awesome Dr. Who scarves…

My grandmother did knit the scarves! She’s never seen the show, but she found a pattern online and made the perfect gift.

  1. LOVE it!!! Al and I are HUGE Dr. Who fans. We carried a Tardis all around with us on our RV road trip this Spring taking pictures with it!!! I so want to pay her grandma to make me a 4th doctor scarf for Al! (I am having a Tardis cake made for his b-day this year!!) Great photos!

  2. These are two of my best friends (even though my character and Max’s do not get along in D&D!), and yes, they really are that adorable, devoted, and geeky in real life. Their wedding is going to be a party-and-a-half; I can’t wait.
