April & Ward’s Black, White and Silver DIY Halloween Wedding

halloween wedding

Happy Halloween everyone! No tricks from me today, just a huge treat in the form of a super cool wedding which I’m about to show you!

You already met April & Ward through the awesome Giant Scrabble E-session I shared a while back. I love the couples whose engagements I feature because chances are their weddings are just as fun & poptastic — and theirs is certainly no exception. Halloween is one of the couple’s favorite holidays and since their wedding was on October 29 (2011), the Halloween theme was a perfect fit. They avoided being too over-the-top and kept things classy with black, white and silver elements though the fun factor was present in the mostly DIY Halloweeny details — painted pumpkins, black feather boas, eyeball candies, poison liquor, and not to mention a Thriller dance line!

I was also pleased to learn that the talented TJ Getz of GetzCreative Photography (see their previous features + Behind the Lens q&a) was behind it and true enough, the photos didn’t disappoint. Now they’re here for all of you see!

How lovely is April? The twosome got married Halloween weekend, 10-29-11 and Ward tells me  it was a BLAST!  They moved to Greenville in June for April’s job, and just actually had their first child a month ago — in fact I was corresponding with them for this feature a week after April gave birth (thank you guys for accommodating my questions!) Here they are with the story behind their wedding:

When we started thinking about dates for our wedding, we were looking at weekends in October and Halloween is one of my favorite holidays so we were really excited about planning for that weekend. We had a certain venue in mind that was industrial/commercial looking with exposed bricks, large windows, and high ceilings.  We knew that the Halloween theme would work well in that space and it was available for that weekend.

LOVE how the fun set of portraits above echo the tone of their equally fun e-session!

Loving everything about this wedding yet? From this point on, April will take us through how they implemented the Halloween theme their own way:

We didn’t want it to be too over the top with Halloween decor so we went with the colors white, black, and silver.  For the ceremony space we went with pumpkins, lanterns and candles to flank the aisle.  We did large urns with black branches and tea lights at the front of the space.  We decorated with black branches with hanging tea lights; pumpkins painted black, white, and silver; and candles with black lace on the table tops.

We did a lot of DIY for the wedding.  For example, we bought all the pumpkins ourselves and painted them all in our garage.  We also made two large wreaths with black feather boas and silver bow to hang on the door to the reception space.  For the table tops we made tea candle holders with black lace wrapped around them.  Our friend painted us a thumbprint tree for our guestbook.  We made the invitations, programs, and menu cards.

We decorated the bar top custom Halloween themed liquor and wine labels.  We also did a cauldron of ice cream floats with dry ice for a midnight snack.  Our favors were black, white, and silver candies (trick or treat style).

We did some Halloween songs mixed in with our regular music  and had a thriller line dance!

  1. What a fun wedding – it’s very classic and has vintage inspirations… but isn’t too “cute” or “commercially Halloween” – congrats on your 1 year anniversary 🙂

  2. Great Couple. Congratulations on Baby. Melanie Murphy at By Invitation Only is the Master at taking someones Ideas and Making them exceed their own expectations. Thanks for sharing this wedding that took place at 701 Whaley.
