Christine & Von’s Colorful University Life: A School Year-Long E-session

university of the philippines e-session

Today’s e-session is close to my heart because not only was it shot on my home turf, the setting is also the school my dear husband and I attended — the University of the Philippines Campus in Diliman, Quezon City, the country’s State University.

That’s not all — cuties Christine and Von’s engagement session spanned an entire school year because they wanted their photos to chronicle their journey from enrollment to graduation! Just. how. awesome. is that? So expect to see photos of them all over popular hang-out spots in the university grounds taken in different months of the year. You’ll also notice that I couldn’t help myself from inserting some information and commentary along with the photos.

The talented and trooper-of-a-photographer is Manila-based Whimboy Echavez Photography. Please enjoy this fun and totally unique e-session!

1. Enrollment

See the long line? That hasn’t changed at all since I myself was in school, er, 10+ years ago.

These two may look like they’re still students but they’re actually already working! They staged their shoot at different parts of the year to coincide with the events in the University so they can reminisce about their school life in a genuine manner. Let’s take this moment to get to know the adorable twosome a little better. Here’s Christine with a few details about themselves:

Von and I were together for 8 years before we got married. We’re each other’s first boyfriend and girlfriend and there really is something very special about ending up with your first love.
The past 8 years were made rich by a lot shared between us, sometimes we really wonder how two people so different (he’s the quiet type and I very rarely run out of words) can be very similar. 😉 We share a passion for movies and books, trying out restaurants, and even the simplest things like staying at home and hanging out. It also helps that our common friends are into out of town trips and trying out different activities like spelunking, cliff climbing, white water rafting, snorkeling, etc — so most of the time, we join them. We really feel like we’ve maximized our time as a young couple doing all those fun activities. In 2011, he proposed and I said yes — we were ready to take things up a notch, we were getting married! 🙂

2. A Couple of Typical School Days

Fishballs are ubiquitous street food fare in the Philippines and are popular particularly in this University.

The buildings where classes are held are scattered all over the place so colorful jeeps like this one ensures that one doesn’t arrive late to class.  This jeepney is called an “IKOT”, literally meaning “to go round and round” because it basically just goes around the huge campus. Jeeps cleverly labeled “TOKI” go the opposite direction.

This photo is set where everything began, a lab at the Department of Computer Science where they were both majors. Christine explains concept for the shoot:

Our love story began when we were 16 as college freshmen at the University of the Philippines. We were together in Physics class and he simply went up to me and asked a Physics-related question — which I correctly answered by the way. 🙂 Now, who was this guy who would just come up to me with random Physics’ trivia, I wondered. Well, for sure he got my attention. We remained close friends and after some time – the Freshmen became Seniors and we officially became a couple and the rest  is history. 🙂

We wanted something that would be really meaningful to us until we’re old and gray so we decided to do it somewhere close to our hearts, the University of the Philippines in Diliman. Since the campus, with its picturesque grounds and wonderful architecture, is a popular place for holding prenups (e-sessions), we chopped ours into 4 shoots instead of having a tiring photo marathon that, in our opinion, only results in tired-looking faces and sometimes poorly-executed concepts. We were also very keen on enjoying this part of the wedding preparations since we are shy types and we really wanted to take our time and be ‘natural models’ at least once in our lives. 🙂

We love staying at the University so much – not to mention this is where it all started!

This humble diner called Rodic’s is another popular hang-out place and it has served past and present students affordable, tasty meals for about 6 decades already.

3. The UP Fair

Every February, the University holds a much-awaited school fair where a carnival and flea market stalls are put up. Rock concerts and other fun activities also take place.

Chris shares more about the refreshingly different take on their e-shoot:

We had so much fun shooting! During the UP Fair session, we were able to gain free access to the rides because the people working there were so accommodating! 😀 It was a loooong year of photo shoots, not to mention we were also working at our day jobs while preparing for the wedding — but its the best part of our preparations. A good memory that will be preserved in pictures.

We were also extra lucky because when we pitched the concept to our chosen photographer Whimboy Echavez, he was very much into it! He’s one amazing photographer (and now friend) who really did capture our dream on camera. It was so nostalgic to shoot in UP and relive those special moments. Whimboy was kind enough to photograph us “guerilla style”, “mud style” (his shoes got ruined because of all the mud at the Sunken
Garden during the UP fair shoot, and was willing to meet us at different points of the year when usually engagement shoots only take a day to finish.

4. The Graduation Ceremony

At the end of the school year (and if one meets the high grade point requirements), the commencement ceremony at the Administration Building Grounds take place.
