Courtney & Brett’s Sweet and Playful E-session Around Naperville

I just love the playful nature of this e-session and I’m sure you’ll know what I mean once you see the charming photos! Kelly Benton Photography beautifully captured Courtney and Brett’s naturally sweet and frolicsome moments and here she is with the details behind the day:

Courtney and Brett exude an energy of pure joy and fun. They can take any situation (even a day that’s 20 degrees and snowy) and make it awesome. For their engagement session, we hit up Courtney’s hometown, Naperville, Illinois. The riverwalk and the entire downtown area have so much to offer visually (and for anyone who’s looking for some amazing shopping and restaurants!). The covered bridge is a classic for photographing couples, but it had special meaning for Courtney and Brett because it’s where Courtney took her fiance when she brought him home for the first time. They were wed in May at the Morton Arboretum, followed by a rockin’ reception at Pinstripes in Oak Brook.

Let’s meet the adorable couple. Here’s Courtney with the details:

Brett is an electrical engineer and I’m an art museum registrar. We enjoy going on walks with our two dogs, Rocket and Pele, watching movies and soccer, remodeling our home, trying new restaurants/food, hiking and camping.

Just how cute are these two? We’re actually in luck because Courtney is here to share their just-as-cute love story!

Brett and I met shortly after I finished college. I went to Ames, IA to visit my brother, Erik, for his 26th birthday and to attend a party in his honor. The party was being held at Brett and his three roommates’ apartment. Brett gave me a tour of his apartment and flirted with me over the course of the evening. 😉

A few months went by when Erik’s girlfriend at the time, (now wife) Susan Winkler, held a birthday/move party, inviting us both to attend. We became facebook friends and met up again when I held a party at my place with my three roommates at the time. We talked about our mutual interest in rock-climbing and set up a general plan to go climbing together. After a month of talking about it we finally went! And after another month or so of getting to know one-another over email correspondence, I drove out to Ames to surprise Brett with a visit and we made our relationship official. We dated for another year or so, and eventually moved to Davenport, Iowa together. After a few years of living in Davenport, Brett got a job in St. Louis, MO and decided to pop the question before he left.

Brett had been planning to propose all along and he worried that I would begin to expect a proposal after he moved (because he had alluded to something along those lines previously) and didn’t want to loose the element of surprise.

We were in the middle of a bathroom remodeling project at the time and were working on the plumbing. We had just placed the bathtub to check the fit and for leaks. Brett was on his knees tightening the drain cover. I was standing behind him, leaning against the wall. He turned around and looked up at me. I thought to myself, “Ohhhhh… he’s going to joke propose.” I looked down and noticed that he had a bit of solder in his hand, so I thought that he picked it up from the floor or something, but in my mind, this confirmed my suspicions. He then said, “Courtney, will you marry me?” I, convinced this was a joke, pulled the solder ring from his hands and threw it at him while saying, “#%&$ NO! Buy me a better ring!” The ring bounced off of him and began to roll towards the exposed air vent to my right. As Brett, scrambled to get the ring before it went into the vent, I realized my HUGE mistake.

He was actually serious and had made me a ring out of solder because he didn’t have the funds to buy a proper ring at the time. It took about 15 minutes of me asking, “Are you really serious?” but I eventually said yes. 😀 Although, he did spend the evening convincing me that this was in fact really happening.

I got a job in St. Louis and moved out of our home to live with him in a tiny 1-BR apartment with our dogs.
After saving up for a few months, Brett decided to re-proposed with a lovely engagement ring. He sneakily stowed away the ring in his pocket, while we climbed through the cavernous City Museum in St. Louis. Then, he surprised me on the roof-top as we overlooked the city at night.

A few words about their e-session:

Our dogs, comfort level and location made the e-session us. We had a lot of fun joking around with our dogs and Kelly, and we feel like we got the best pictures from those moments. Being in a downtown like Naperville with so many different nooks made it feel like an adventure and gave us a great variety of settings to choose from.
