Shelly & Randy’s Colorful & Edgy Skateboarding-in-a-Graffiti’d-Lot E-session

skateboard and graffiti e-session

A fun-loving and so-in-love couple + a skateboard + an abandoned lot filled with colorful graffiti is a surefire formula for AWESOME photos as this e-session demonstrates. So excited to share it with you today!

We have Jennifer Woodbery of j.woodbery photography to thank for this wonderful shoot and she’s here to tell you more about it:

When Shelly wrote me about doing engagement photos and shared her ideas with me for a funky afternoon at a graffiti’d abandoned parking lot, I was thrilled! Shelly and Randy both love doing things a little differently, and this location was perfect for that. The incorporation of the skateboard was fun too, and we could not have had better sunlight. We had a great session, and I know their wedding will be full of fun as well!

These two are so adorable! Luckily we have the deets on how they met courtesy of Randy himself. He said:

We met and became friends while Shelly worked at a restaurant that my friends and I frequented.  She caught my eye the first time I saw her, and I had to pout a little after that first trip when she didn’t pay as much attention to us (me) as I wanted.  I got her back though a few trips later when I thought that her name was Stella instead of Shelly.  I was like, “yep, that’s right; I didn’t pay attention to you either!” (even though that was hardly true).  Then one day my friends and I were eating lunch and talking to Shelly; and it came out that she was interested in changing jobs and it just so happened that we needed some help at our company.  After a few months of working together our friendship became closer and it became pretty obvious that there was also a pretty strong attraction between us as well.  Our friendship then evolved and we’ve been together ever since.  That was almost three years ago 🙂

Between us we have three kids; Ethan(5), Nia(5), and Weston(8).  So needless to say we don’t have too much free time.  When it does come around we usually enjoy just spending some quiet time together over a nice dinner out and then a movie or some mindless television at home.  When we have a few days free we enjoy traveling together and seeing new things.  Our trips have included Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, San Antonio, and New Year’s Eve in Nashville.  We’re both pretty easygoing and spontaneous and don’t really do much planning.  Most of the time it works out great and we have a blast just wandering around and finding things to do.

Outside of work and kids we both enjoy being outdoors, riding motorcycles, and spending a few hours at the shooting range.  She’s become a pretty good shot with a .40 cal and a 9mm (not so sure that’s a good thing for me!).  One of my favorite trips we’ve taken came last fall.  We rode my BMW F800 (motorcycle) from Birmingham to Helen, GA.  On the trip over we hit rush hour traffic in Atlanta and got stuck on I285 forever, and on the way back it I misjudged the time it would take to get home and we wound up finishing the ride after dark in 30 degree weather. She never complained even though I’m sure she wanted to reach up and strangle me!

We’re both pretty unconventional so when it came to the engagement shoot we both wanted a unique location and a style that you don’t see every day.  One of the guys in our office is an avid skateboarder and told us about this abandoned parking lot littered with garbage and graffiti.  We both thought that it could be pretty interesting but knew that it might be a challenge to make it work. Shelly’s extremely creative, and keeping with the skateboarding theme she styled both of us really well and her and Jennifer came up with ideas for most of the shots on the fly.

And now we have the lovely Shelly’s take on the two of them  + their e-session! She said:

I first met Randy when he and his friends visited a restaurant I worked at a little over four years ago. We laugh now b/c I didn’t give him the attention he wanted but he made a lasting impression on me that even I was unaware of. My mom likes to remind me that I would continue to talk about him outside of work and what a “good looking, cool guy” he was. She knew long before I did how I truly felt about him. The guys needed help within their company and the subject came up as they were having lunch at my bar one day…just so happens I was looking to change jobs and it couldn’t have been more of a perfect fit! It didn’t take long for the sparks to fly and attraction to grow considering from then on I was able to spend my days with a man I couldn’t get out of my head. I like to say we work so well together because we were truly friends first and the thing called love had a plan all along 🙂

Most of our days are filled with kids activities as we have three beautiful, entertaining and silly kiddos between us. When we do have time as a couple or “date night”, a nice dinner outing at our favorite restaurant and “mindless television” (as he likes to call it) back home hits the spot. During the day we’d choose to be outdoors having lunch on a patio somewhere, riding his motorcycle to a random location or having a friendly competition at the shooting range. He’s introduced me to things I never thought I’d try and he’s quite proud of the shot I’ve become 😉 We are a big fan of traveling together and enjoy the spontaneity of last minute trips. As he can tell you, I’m not the greatest flyer but he’s the one person that can calm my nerves and makes it all worthwhile. I have to say, my favorite trip is still the first one we ever took together to LA and then made an unplanned hop over to Vegas…literally changed our flight plans in the airport waiting to board the delayed flight from LA back home. The time we spent just walking, talking and taking in the sights together on the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach and Vegas Strip I will never forget.

When we first talked about the idea of an engagement shoot, we both knew we wanted to “think outside of the box”. I also knew that Randy was much more of a fan of being behind the camera rather than in front of it, so I wanted to choose somewhere that would fit his personality and bring out the fun side of him that I know. When I first met him, one of the things I remember him for was just having a blast and letting loose on the skateboard in his driveway so when I came across this abandoned skateboard park in our city I knew I had to find it. Now we had only seen a couple of pictures of this undisclosed location online so lucky enough for us, we have an avid skateboarder in the office and he knew exactly where it was! Randy was sweet and more than willing (lol) to leave the styling up to me so I chose outfits and props that would play off of one another as well as fit our colorful, unique and somewhat edgy location. We had so much fun shooting with Jennifer Woodbery and got so many great shots at this particular spot that we decided there was no need to go elsewhere!

  1. Hi,
I am currently looking for a funky and different location to take a family pic. I live in the Birmingham area and wonder if you could tell me the location of the abandoned skate park with the beautiful graffiti? I’m not a professional photographer, just a Mom trying to find a good picture backdrop.

    Thanks for your help,
    Bretta
